Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a pervasive issue across European academia, impacting students, faculty, and staff alike. Alarming statistics reveal the gravity of this crisis: 6 in 10 individuals report experiencing psychological violence, and 1 in 3 have faced sexual harassment, as per the UniSAFE survey conducted across 46 universities. This underscores the urgent need for systemic change, and this is where GenderSAFE and Project EQUAL step in.
GenderSAFE is an EU-funded initiative dedicated to advancing a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence in higher education and research institutions. The project builds upon the tools and insights developed by the UniSAFE survey, which involved over 42,000 participants. By providing research-based strategies, GenderSAFE helps institutions establish comprehensive policies that combat GBV effectively and promote safer, more inclusive environments.
Project EQUAL complements the efforts of GenderSAFE by focusing on fostering equality and addressing discrimination in academia. Our initiative works to empower individuals to break the silence around GBV, educate communities on recognizing violence, and advocate for inclusive and equitable practices. Together, these projects aim to dismantle barriers such as pay gaps, harassment, and leadership inequalities, ensuring fair opportunities for all.
The Reality of GBV in Academia
The numbers are sobering:
- Only 1 in 8 incidents of GBV in academia are reported.
- 7 in 10 individuals from minority groups, such as LGBTQI+ communities and people with disabilities, report experiencing higher rates of GBV.
- GBV impacts not only individuals but also the broader academic community by reducing productivity, engagement, and opportunities for growth.
Why It Matters
Gender-based violence is not just a personal issue; it is a systemic problem that affects everyone. It erodes the fabric of academic institutions, discourages innovation, and hinders progress. By addressing these issues head-on, we create safer, more inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive.
